Ramp Fire Follow-Up: Last July, while trying to film a desert thunderstorm, we instead filmed the "Ramp Fire." See Earth Science Picture of the Day for September 17, 2006. The top left photo was taken on that day, with the fire being about 16 km (10 mi) past the hill in the foreground. The top right photo was taken in the burn area on November 25, 2006. Life was starting to return, even though rainfall had been sparse. The bottom two photos were taken on April 7, 2007. Re-growth is not occurring as fast as would normally be expected since Southern California is now experiencing the driest year on record -- since record keeping began in 1870. Only 75 mm (3 in) of rain has fallen thus far this year -- the annual average is approximately 381 mm (15 in). Still, life is resilient, and the vegetation will eventually return.
