The reddened landscape and sky shown above was captured at Pamukkale, Turkey on March 20, 2006. Dust and aerosols in the lower atmosphere have scattered out all but the longest wavelengths of light. The colored sky is reflected on sediment-laden thermal ponds among these cascading travertine terraces, which look a startling white under full daylight.
