The photo above showing a fascinating sundog was captured on the morning of April 3, 2007 from near Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in northern California. As I looked out my window toward Mt. Baldy shortly after sunrise (7:30 a. m. local time), I observed a single sundog or parhelion, approximately 22 degrees to the left of the Sun. Mt. Baldy (2,720 ft or 829 m) is located in the Mayacamas Mountains, between Sonoma and Napa Valley. See also the Earth Science Picture of the Day for December 13, 2003.
