The photograph shown above of a massive smoke plume was captured from the patio of my house in the high desert of Hesperia, California, at an elevation of about 3,500 ft (1,067 m). The fire producing the smoke was on the back side of the Lake Arrowhead Mountains. This vicious fire destroyed nearly 200 homes. Note that the Running Springs and Grass Valley fires (seen as the glow behind the left high tension tower) were just a little east of the Arrowhead fire. Two days after this photo was taken (October 23, 2007), smoke from all three fires nearly filled the sky.
