The photo above showing a pleasing Pacific sunset near Kalaloch, Washington was captured on July 24, 2007. Note the glitter patch on the surf, a pair of sundogs, and even a sun pillar (above the Sun). Hexagonal ice crystals in the cirrus clouds were responsible for producing the pillar and parhelia (sundogs). The glitter patch resulted from multiple reflections of the low hanging Sun off the rippled surf.
