After a major ice storm that encased parts of the southern Plains on December 10-11, 2007 (note the numerous reports of freezing rain on the meteogram from Tulsa, Oklahoma, below), Greg Carbin photographed this icy mold of the top of a municipal fire hydrant in Norman, Oklahoma. The ice was 3/4 to 1 inch thick (2-2.5 cm)! Greg surgically separated this "ice sculpture" around the edge of the top of the hydrant, and then placed it on a white beverage cooler in order to better illustrate the impressive veneer of ice.
