The photo above shows an interesting view of the night sky near San Francisco, California, during the lunar eclipse of February 20, 2008. It was amazing to watch the stars become more and more visible as the Moon moved into the deepest portion of the Earth's shadow (umbra). Eventually, I was even able to see the Milky Way. The nearly eclipsed Moon is visible at left center. The brightly lit area at the bottom is San Francisco. Photo taken about 7:00 p.m. local time.
