The Neck Game Reserve is situated on the isthmus shown above joining North and South Bruny Islands. An isthmus is a slender strip of land that joins two larger landmasses. Here the isthmus is about 394 ft (120 m) wide. The northern tip of the Islands is about 12.5 mi (20 km) south of Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. This photo was taken from the top of the Truganini Stairs and is looking south. At the base of the stairs, to the left, is a penguin rookery. Here, there are viewing platforms where you can observe both short-tailed shearwaters and Little Blue, or Fairy Penguins (Eudyptula minor). Click on this link to get an idea of the position and size of the Neck. Photo taken on October 8, 2006 with a Fuji FinePix S7000 camera.
