The above photo showing a striking scarlet sunset was captured at La-Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland, on November 7, 2007. Lac Léman (aka Lake Geneva) is in the mid-ground and the silhouetted French Alps are in the background. Altostratus clouds are among the showiest when the Sun dips toward the horizon, or begins to rise above it. Pale white and somewhat banal during mid day, these clouds are often fiery when the path-length of the Sun's rays noticeably increases at sundown and sunup.
