The photo above showing a well-formed coast live oak, silhouetted against a dramatic sky, was taken in West Napa Valley, California, following a powerful winter storm. California's chaparral environment receives most of its precipitation during the coldest months of the year. These winter rains must sustain trees, both big and small, through the summer season when the rainfall is usually scant. Photo taken in December of 2002.
