Smoke from a protracted bushfire several kilometers away gave the Sun a red glow as it rose above the city of Grafton, New South Wales, Australia, in October of last year. A particularly dry winter and warm spring temperatures resulted in many fires around the state giving quite an early start to the bushfire season. The shorter, bluer wavelengths of sunlight have been scattered by the smoke particles, allowing only the longer, redder wavelengths to come through. Photo taken on October 3, 2007.
