It can be mesmerizing to look at ocean waves. Even in a big storm, it sometimes seems as though the ocean invites unwary beachcomber and bathers to come closer. Then suddenly, a huge wave comes crashing ashore in a powerful explosion. That’s just what the surfers shown above were waiting for – to ride the big surf. This looming wave was generated by a deepening storm off northern California in mid-February of 2008. Wave heights greater than 10 ft (3 m) were reported in this winter storm.
