The photo above was captured from the Vosges Mountains in eastern France. The landscape is illuminated only by moonlight. In the foreground is the Alsace Plain, enshrouded by fog, and behind it, on the other side of the valley, is the Black Forest of Germany. The Swiss Alps are in the far background, approximately 122 miles (200 km) distant. The lights peering through the fog are from Strasbourg, France. Photo taken on January 25, 2008 when the Moon was in the waning gibbous phase.
