The photo above shows the appropriately named diamond ring effect, which was captured during the total solar eclipse visible across northern Turkey on March 29, 2006. The diamond ring may be observed a few seconds before totality as the last rays of sunlight stream through canyons on the surface of the Moon, combining with the emerging ring of the inner corona. This results in a brief but brilliant ring of silvery light.
