In Dabob Bay, Washington, one of the lowest tides of the year was observed on June 7, 2008. As a result of the very low waterline, more than the usual amount of Zostera Marina, or eel grass, could be seen. Eel grass is imperative to the survival of the Puget Sound. It provides shelter and food to marine and land animals and produces organic carbon, which is a basic and essential component of the Puget Sound habitat. Eelgrass truly is a grass and not a seaweed. It flowers and produces roots that stabilize estuary and shoreline soils.
