The photo above showing snow sifting down at the entrance of Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland (between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland) was taken in January of 2008. Goddard is one of 11 NASA centers. 2009 is NASA’s 50th anniversary! NASA’s mission is to pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research.
Though this winter the temperatures have been seasonal (slightly below normal) in the greater Washington, D.C. area, there’s been a dearth of snow. Greenbelt averages about 20” (8 cm) of snowfall during the winter season. However, only about 2” (5 cm) have fallen thus far. It would take an extremely patient photographer indeed to capture a shot like the one shown above during this current winter.
