The photo above showing a rousing dawn was captured not far from Nevada, Missouri on November 5, 2008 (about 7:20 a.m. local time). A light rain had just begun to fall and was illuminated from behind by the rising Sun. The darker clouds just in back of the rain curtain enhanced the contrast. It looks like virga (rainfall that evaporates before reaching the surface), but this precipitation definitely dampened the ground - and the photographer.
