Altocumulus and altostratus clouds filled the sky above Curitiba, Brazil during the morning hours of March 15, 2010. Just after noon, however, the clouds cleared in only the western portion of the sky. Strangely, the sky remained this way the entire afternoon. But as the Sun approached the horizon, I could just sense that we’d be treated to an amazing sunset. So I prepared my tripod and camera and patiently waited for the show to begin. It was indeed worth the wait! The fast sinking Sun illuminated the bottom of the mid-level clouds in shades of orange and gold. If more of the clouds had dissipated, the sunset would not have been near as memorable. The Sun’s rays need something to bounce off of, be it clouds or dust and ash particles, to get our full attention. Curitiba’s skyline is in the distance.
