The top photograph shows a roadcut near mile marker 195 on US highway 6 from Spanish Fork to Price, Utah, that exposes the Green River Formation. This Formation is marked by interbedding of low-grade oil shale, light limestone and tan sandstone. It was created about 56 to 34 million years ago during the transition between the shallow delta of the Eocene Green River and the subsequent formation of the Eocene Lake Uinta. The bluff shown in the bottom picture, located about a half mile (0.8 km) east of the top photograph, shows the interbedded Green River Formation at its base. It was overlain with subsequent deposits when flooded by Lake Uinta. Photos taken early May 2010.
