“Water, whether still or in motion, has so great an attraction for the lover of nature, that the most beautiful landscape seems scarcely complete without it. There are no effects so fascinating as those produced by the reflexions in nature’s living mirror, with their delicacy of form, ever fleeting and changing, and their subtle combinations of colour.“
Montagu Pollock - Light and Water: A Study of Reflexion and Colour in River, Lake and Sea, 1903
Water and light together are endlessly fascinating. Here a photograph taken near Tromso, Norway, captures the fleeting image of sky, cloud and mountain (small rectangle in the left image), gracefully distorted, repeated and blended. By comparing the two pictures, it's easy to see that the blue sky hole touches the white, sunlit cloud (above and right of the blue sky) and the shadowed blue-gray cloud below. Only the steepest waves are inclined enough to pick up bits of the black mountain. Photo taken on June 25, 2010.
