The photo montage of the waning Moon featured above was captured from Coslada, Spain. The sequence begins on July 29, 2010 with the Moon in gibbous phase and ends on August 7 (crescent phase). Three photos were acquired for each phase and then stacked with Photoshop. Photos of the two gibbous Moons in the foreground of the montage were taken just after midnight, whereas the remaining photos were taken between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. The full Moon was observed on July 26, and the new Moon occurred on August 10. Tycho is the huge crater visible at the lower right of the most illuminated images.

Photo details: Orion Mak 180/2700 telescope with primary focus; Canon 350d camera; neodymium filter. Retouched with Photoshop -- three images stacked for each final image.
