The photo above showing contrail hieroglyphics was captured over Mouscron, Belgium. Though contrail formation is easily explained, the smoke ring like patterns that on occasion form instead of continuous vapor trails is quite mysterious. It's hard not to imagine that they're shaped by local air currents, but why they take on the bizarre shapes they sometimes do is poorly understood. Photo taken on June 2, 2011.
