As the full Moon of June 15, 2011 rose over western Europe, shown above at Portinho Arrabida, Portugal, it was already fully eclipsed by the Earth's umbra shadow. The deep crimson colored path of the rising Moon, at center, shows the totality phase of this eclipse. Not until later in the evening (9:43 local time) did the Moon escape the Earth's shadow -- the brightened portion of the path.
