The wide-angle photo above shows the western sky near Dallas Center, Iowa imbued with shades of gold, tangerine, baby blue, and violet. This magnificent summer sunset was captured a little after 9:00 p.m. on July 5, 2011 -- the Sun had set minutes before. The Earth’s surface is in shadow while mid- and high-level clouds collect and reflect sunlight, which is noticeably reddened by its long path length. Note that the "arching" is due to the camera lens.
