Fall Colors in the Sierras

The photo above showing the golden, autumnal wardrobe of aspen trees (Populus tremuloides) was taken at Rock Creek Lake in the eastern Sierra Nevada range of California. Aspen groves are in essence a single living organism. All of the trees in a grove share the same genetic material, sprouting from the same root system. Note that there's little color variation within the grove in the foreground. Photo taken in late September 2009.
