Photographer: Piero Armando
Summary Author: Piero Armando The photo at top features Poetry Cave (Grotta della Poesia) and shows the karst landscape of the Apulia region of southern Italy. Dissolution of Pleistocene carbonate (limestone or dolomite) bedrock has slowly resulted from the infiltration of surface water. Poetry Cave is a cenote that formed from the roof collapse of an underground cavern. In other places dissolution pipes have punched through a permeable layer near the surface (lower photos). Photos taken on June 23, 2008.
