Frosty Feathers and Flowers

As shown above, my kitchen window was coated one morning several weeks ago with a frosty decorative display. It looked like a garden or feathers and flowers. Below freezing temperatures on the outside of the window and moist air on the inside led to the frost formation. The low temperature of the glass (very cold outside air) allowed the moisture to go directly from a gaseous state to a solid state. If the window glass weren't as cold as it was on this early winter's morning, then any water vapor on the inside of the pane would have likely just formed an icy layer on the window. Dust, scratches and glass imperfections all influence the design of the frost patterns. Photo taken on December 1, 2012 near Bark Lake, Ontario, Canada.
