Summary Author: Doug Sudduth; Jim Foster
The photo above features a lenticular wave cloud (at center) as viewed from Mitchell County, North Carolina, during the morning of January 9, 2013. The camera is looking south toward Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountain Range of western North Carolina. They're referred to as a standing wave cloud since they form at the wave crest in stationary air currents. The wave undulates but the crest (moist region) and trough (dry region) are generally pinned on the lee side of elevated terrain.
