The photo above showing Mount Etna erupting for the ninth time this year was taken on the afternoon of April 3 from near Catania, Italy, on the island of Sicily. Etna’s new southeast crater was the focus of the most recent flash eruption (fountains of lava). According to eyewitnesses this eruption was particularly loud, even at a distance of 4 mi (6.4 km). Note that in spite of the eruptive activity of this past winter, snow still sticks to the flanks of the 10,900 ft (3,325 m) volcano.
