The photo above features the otherworldly White Rim Plateau and canyon of the Green River in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. This area is filled with spectacular views that dramatically illustrate the effect of erosion through numerous sedimentary rock layers. The plateau is found in part of the park named for the Island in the Sky mesa that towers about 1,200 ft (367 m) above it. It's composed largely of sandstone, dating from the early Permian period. The whitish appearance of the rim is attributed to bleaching from various hydrocarbons. Photo taken on April 19, 2013.
