The photo above showing interesting cloud shadows above Thessaloniki, Greece, was snapped on August 19, 2013. These shadows are likely cast on a layer of air that’s somewhat hazy (composed of dry aerosols such as dust or smoke particles). The hazy air scatters sunlight more strongly than otherwise would be the case. Such shadowing is more readily observed when you’re looking more or less in the direction of the Sun -- within about 10 degrees of the solar disk. On this photo, the Sun’s position is to the right and below the cloud band (just off the frame).
