The photo above shows an aerial view of the Little Sahara Recreation Area in west central Utah. It was captured from the window of my Cessna 172 on September 23. The sand dunes at left center are over 200 m high. Note that the prevailing wind direction is from upper right to lower left – from southwest to northeast. A close up view of the smaller dunes is shown at left. This dune complex formed after the former Lake Bonneville receded 12,000 to 20,000 years ago. Compare this photo with a similar view taken in midwinter.
