The photo above shows the extended shadows of a stand of conifers stretched out over a layer of fog. It was taken just after sunup in Sokraki village, Corfu, Greece, on October 28, 2013. I was positioned on a high hilltop looking down at the fog layer. When the Sun is low in the sky from the viewer's perspective shadows appear not only exaggerated in length but distorted as well -- the top of the object being illuminated is much more elongated than is the bottom. Since conifers are already tipped (conical), their low Sun shadows can look like sharpened pencils.
