The photo above showing a low-hanging Sun over Mo i Rana, Norway, was taken on January 19, 2014. This is the date that the Sun first returns to this area of northern Norway after remaining below the horizon for nearly two months. Note that although the Sun is slightly above the horizon at this latitude even in mid-winter, except near the time of the solstice, it's blocked by mountains here. Despite the welcome sunshine, the air is nonetheless bitter cold -- air temperature of 10 F (-12 C). Note the drifting snow. The wind chill temperature was a bone-chilling -13 F (-25 C).
