Starry gems of the winter sky, including Orion (at top center), appear over the snow-covered moonlit peaks of the Meili Snow Mountains in southern China. Located in the World Heritage area of Three Parallel Rivers, Mount Meili presents an extreme topographic gradient with vertical relief ranging from less than 2,000 m (6,562 ft) along the Mekong River on the east to 6,740 m (22,113 ft) on the summit of Kawagarpo (bottom right center) -- within 6 mi (10 km) horizontal distance. Note that the splotch of yellow-orange at bottom is from lights shining on the Fei lai temple. Photo taken on December 25, 2013.
