The photo above shows an abandoned home on the Arctic tundra of Andoya Island, Norway, with an alluring aurora as a backdrop. It was taken under a moonlit sky on February 1, 2014. The camera is facing northwest. What's unusual is the nearly complete lack of snow. This past winter was extraordinarily wet and warm across much of northwestern Europe. In coastal regions of northern Norway, areas that were wet were also snowy, but in areas in between storm corridors, and in rain shadows, little snow accumulated and what did fall was easily swept away by strong winds. In Tromso, Norway, to the northeast of Andoya Island, it was quite a different story. Upwards of 20 inches (50 cm) of snow fell just in the first week of April. Note the meteor trails and or jet contrails -- the most prominent is at upper right.
