Auroral Corona Over Hemnesberget, Norway

Finally the new aurora season is here and it started in the best way possible. Many of these auroral coronas appeared over Hemnesberget, Nordland, Norway in late summer when the sky was sufficiently dark for observing the northern lights. Auroras can take on myriad shapes and the same aurora will look quite different when viewed on the horizon compared to when it’s viewed directly overhead. There are three common forms: an east/west band or an arc near the horizon, vertical rays like fabric fringe and a corona when seen from directly below. Photo taken August 28, 2014.
