Summary Authors: Stavros Hios; Jim Foster

The photo above shows a splendid night sky dominated by Orion the Hunter (right center), as observed from the Kyllini Mountains, Corinthia, Greece. Betelgeuse, a red supergiant 700 times the diameter of our Sun, is at center, and brilliant Rigel, a blue supergiant, is at right. The familiar asterism known as Orion's Belt (shown here pointing straight up) consists of the three stars of similar brightness and of near equal distance between each other. Orion's Sword, another asterism of Orion, dangling to the lower right of Orion's Belt features the gleaming jewel the Great Orion Nebula. Photo taken on December 20, 2014.
