Cyclamen (Family Primulaceae) is perhaps the most popular flower in the eastern Mediterranean region of the Middle East, during late autumn and winter. The photo of the specimen shown at top was taken in the hills near Jerusalem, Israel. It thrives in semiarid climates and because of its adaptability has become a sought after potted plant due to its very large flowers, wide range of decorative colors and vitality of foliage. The main focus on cyclamen breeding has been to improve its floral characteristics. In the wild, flowers typically have white colors with strong tints of purple or pink.
