We live in an area of central Oklahoma where low sandstone ridges and deciduous trees block the true horizon, but in midwinter this is as close as it gets. This lovely sunset was made possible by a bank of nicely positioned mid-level clouds. It started as a soft gold and turned into a pink and purple ladder of ever-expanding beauty with the silhouetted bones of the winter trees holding it in their arms. As the Sun dips nearer and nearer to the horizon the sky reddens because the path length of sunlight increases, scattering out the shorter wavelength colors. Photo taken on January 1, 2014.
