Shown above is the scenic Kuang Si Falls in Laos. These falls begin in shallow pools atop a steep hillside, leading to the main falls and a 200 ft (60 m) cascade over travertine rock (a form of limestone). As often observed when streams flow over travertine, water collects in terraced pools before flowing downstream. Sediments in the pools collect and help build new terraces. Because this particular pool is considered a sacred Buddhist site, activities such as swimming and fishing aren't permitted. Photo taken on February 20, 2011.
