The photo above showing a type of ancient conifer was taken in Caviahue, Neuquen, Argentina. Araucaria first appeared in the Mesozoic Era and is a genus of conifer in the family Araucariaceae. There are 19 species in this genus with a distribution throughout the Southern Hemisphere. These impressive trees having distinctive columnar trunks reach heights of up to 150 ft (46 m) in the Andes region of Chile and Argentina. Photo taken on September 16, 2014.
