Plitvice Lakes in Croatia

Shown above is a striking view of the Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia. Separated by a series of waterfalls, these impressive lakes flow over natural travertine dams. The limestone and dolomite rocks found here cause high concentrations of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the water. This, together with algae and other organisms, give the lakes their signature blue-green colors. The colors will differ with varying mineral concentrations and even with changes in the angle of the Sun. Plitvice Lakes National Park was declared a World Heritage Site in1979 by UNESCO.
