Sunrise from Santa Maria Volcano

This golden sunrise was observed from near the top of the volcano Santa Maria, Guatemala, on February 28, 2015. I was approximately 12,140 ft (3,700 m) above sea level when I snapped this shot -- looking east. Fine dust and ash particles in the atmosphere from ongoing activity of the volcanoes Fuego and Santiaguito scatter sunlight, contributing to eye-catching sunrises and sunsets. Volcanoes of the Guatemala chain shown here include Toliman, Santiago, Atitlan, Fuego, Agua, Acatenango, Tacana, Tajumulco and Santiaguito.
