Java's Tengger Caldera

Seen above are several of the volcanic vents inside the Tengger caldera on the island of Java, Indonesia. In the foreground is the inactive Batok cone with Mount Bromo (7,641 ft or 2,329 m) smoldering to its left. The Tengger caldera is about 10 m (16 km) wide and contains five stratovolcanoes formed over the last 820,000 years. Seen in the background is Mount Semeru the highest point on the island. Semeru frequently and regularly erupts producing a giant ash cloud, making for an unbelievable sight. This area is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and is a popular destination for tourists. Photo taken half an hour before sunrise.
