The beautiful Serra del Montsec, pictured here, is located on the southern slope of the Pre-Pyrenees Mountains in Spain. This fascinating landscape is divided into different areas by striking gorges (congosts), gouged primarily as a result of erosion by the Noguera Pallaresa River and the Noguera Ribagorçona River (featured above within the Mont-rebei Gorge). To the left is a land referred to as Aragon and at right is Catalonia. The calcareous rocks in Montsec host an enormous collection of plant and animal fossils -- two unidentified examples are shown above. Photos taken on July 12, 2010.
