Shown above is Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake/Lagoon) on São Miguel Island, in the Portuguese Azores. It's one of the largest lakes in the Azores and an important source of fresh water for São Miguel's residents. This 1.25 mi (2 km) by 0.6 mi (1 km) lake fills an extinct volcanic caldera that formed during an eruption in 1593. The lake is part of the Natural Reserve of Lagoa do Fogo.
