While waiting to photograph the sunset from a beach near Magoito, Portugal, my attention was captured by this magnificent coastal landscape featuring a layered sand dune and an algae-covered tidal pool and inlet. The consolidated sand dune (fossil dune) was formed over a period lasting approximately10 million years as loose sand eventually became hardened sandstone. Contributing to the colors of the tidal zone are genera of green algae, including sea lettuce (Enteromorpha), and red algae (Asparagopsis armata and Lithophyllum). Photo taken on April 4, 2015.
