Dunbar, Fossils, Limestone, 300 million years old

Summary Author: Cindy Todd

This chunk of fossilized coral and seashells (about 6.5 in or 16 cm in width) was found near Dunbar, Scotland. These Carboniferous corals/shells (Amplexus coralloides) are formed on limestone and are believed to be some 300 million years old. Aside from the fossilized rocks, the Dunbar region is interesting geologically because rocks can be collected in this area that result from volcanic, metamorphic and or sedimentary activity, even on the beaches of the North Sea. Photo taken in early January 2016.
