Shown above is beautiful Morro Bay, California. The impressive rock formation in the background, Morro Rock, is an ancient volcanic plug that formed when magma solidified within the throat of what once was a volcano. Standing 576 ft (176 m) above the sea, it's been an important navigational aid for mariners since the mid 16th century. It's also known as one of the Nine Sisters of San Luis Obispo County, volcanic plugs that line the Los Osos Valley between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Photo taken on January 1, 2016.
